The Department of World Economy of St. Petersburg State University is a dynamically developing educational and research unit of the Faculty of Economics. In its modern form, it emerged in 1996, when the departments of economics of foreign countries and international economic relations were merged.
Every year, the Department of World Economy trains highly qualified specialists in the field of world economy, international economic relations and international business. After graduation, students of the department are in demand both in the Russian and foreign labor markets. Many graduates eventually occupy leading positions in international companies and organizations, government agencies, and also open their own businesses operating in the markets of different countries and regions of the world.
Today, the Department of World Economy concentrates some of the best teachers in Russia, who are specialists in the field of international trade, investment and other issues related to the global economy. The department's employees have extensive experience in participating in international research projects, speaking at scientific conferences, and giving lectures abroad. Due to this, it is possible to constantly expand international connections, participate in student exchange programs, cooperate with leading educational and research centers in the UK, USA, Germany, Finland, China, India, etc.
As a result of such activity, since 2009, the Department of World Economy has been a specialized department of the World Trade Organization (WTO), with 14 universities in developing and least developed countries becoming partners in the first stage. As of 2023, 36 universities participate in this program. However, the Department of World Economy of St. Petersburg State University was one of the first.
In 2011, the Free Economic Society of Russia recognized the Department of World Economy of St. Petersburg State University as the best in the category “Foreign Economic Activity”.
The Department of World Economy of St. Petersburg State University continues its work aimed at training highly qualified personnel, participates in international projects such as “Jean Monnet Modules” and “Marie Curie International Program”, updates educational programs, offering new and relevant courses for its students.
